Calgary Curling Club

Board of Directors

Ron Pelkey

Ron Pelkey

President

I joined the CCC Board of Directors in September 2017 and have enjoyed every, at times challenging, minute serving.  Having curled as a young lad with my mother and father then intermittently through high school, I began curling regularly in 1980.  I signed up with the CCC Board to contribute to the management of our great club and give a small something to such a wonderful and varied sport.

Educated at the University of Calgary I have a couple of BSc degrees, one in Biochemistry and another in Computer Science.  My original desires were to enter medicine but I found my true passion in the IT sector.  My professional career spanned some 30 years in the oil patch.  I’ve been retired for over 10 years now and spend my free time, volunteering (at a couple of hiking clubs, the Calgary Folk Music Festival and of course at the CCC, which, during the pandemic has been nearly a full time job) and when not volunteering I’m in the mountains hiking or on my bike on roads and pathways throughout southern Alberta or at my computer learning new IT skills.

My son curls at the CCC and my daughter and wife are curlers in a recreational league in the City.  My long term objective is to help ensure that our sport thrives in Canada.

The Calgary Curling club has always felt like home for me. Curling started for me at the age of 9, in the clubs Jr. Curling program. My siblings and I curled recreationally with the club and eventually moved into competitive curling representing the club. When I finished high school and was looking for a job, my curling coach suggested the office at the club. This started a 15 year long career with the CCC and influenced lifelong involvement with recreation and community sport. Working at the club also influenced the direction of my schooling leading me to a Diploma in recreation management.

I am a 3rd degree black belt in Shotokan Karate. I teach at and manage several community karate programs across the province of Alberta. My experiences from growing up at the CCC have instilled in me the importance of sports at the community level. I am also an accountant working in a small firm in Calgary. I fell into accounting by accident when a club member needed some office help after the curling season ended, that was 15 years ago. My unique exposure to the full business cycle of accounting as well as providing HR services to Canadian small businesses are an asset to my role with the board.

Being around the club as a child and then through work, I saw so many members volunteering their time to make the club as successful as possible. The passion that they all held for the club as well as the sport of curling is why I volunteered for the board. The curling club has so many ties to events throughout my life on so many levels. I would not be where I am today without the club and I will always be doing everything I can to give back to the club and the sport of curling.

I have curled actively since I was 9, and a member and Shareholder of the CCC since 1995… Throughout the years I competed competitively  through Juniors, University and into Men’s. Participated in the CODA Curling program from 1995-1998. Participated in Two Alberta Provincial Championships. Champion of two CIS Canadian Universaide Championships. Now curling recreationally, focusing on family and career, I thought volunteering for the Board of Directors of the CCC would be a great way to give back to the sport and the Club that has been so great to me over the years.

Educated at the University of Calgary and SAIT, I am currently a Professional Senior Geophysicist for an oil and gas producer. Have been working as a Geophysicist since 2006 in various roles and disciplines. I am a member of APEGA, Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG), Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG).  Participating member in the CSEG Chief Geophysicists Forum (CSEG CGF) promoting the value of Geophysics. Past Chairman and committee member of the CSEG Doodlespiel.

Curling has always been a passion for me throughout the years and has in many ways the people I have met, the friends and relationships I have made because of Curling, have shaped me to be the person I am today. Doing my small part to ensure the sport and the CCC’s longevity and prosperity, for years to come, is why I Volunteered for the CCC BoD.

My roots at the Calgary Curling Club started many years ago, when I was a child spending Friday evenings there while my parents curled in the Mixed league. The Club continued being a second home to me as I spared and participated in many evening leagues throughout the years and competed at and represented the Club in various competitive and recreational bonspiels. Most recently, I have represented the CCC at competitive mixed doubles events.  As a young curler, I learned to curl at the Family Leisure Centre and Garrison Curling Club. My interest in curling continued to grow, propelling me to compete at the Junior level throughout Western Canada. As I entered men’s, I continued to compete competitively at the provincial level.  Throughout my time curling, the Calgary Curling Club continually supported me.

When I’m not at the rink, you can find me pursuing my passion for the outdoors. I enjoy hiking, biking and camping as much as possible. I attended the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta, studying Conservation Biology. I graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences. From there, I began my career as a Wildlife Biologist. I’m fortunate to spend many of my days in the field interacting with and studying various wildlife species. Whether it’s watching bear cubs play fighting or studying a rattlesnake to see how many babies she is pregnant with, my days are always eventful and fun.

I believe I bring a young, active mindset with an extensive knowledge and connection to the competitive curling side of the sport to the Board of Directors. With this in mind, I look to bring in new ideas and support the Club to continue being one of the best curling clubs in the province.

A curler for 40 years, I became a director to give back to the sport of curling and because I made a commitment to myself early in my career to always serve as a volunteer. I am always finding ways to apply my forward-thinking and passion for curling to benefit the board, shareholders and members. I firmly believe in the importance of volunteering and how to work with the interest of others in mind.

I have a Public Relations Diploma from Grant MacEwan Community College.  My post secondary education gave me a strong base in communication, special event management, and information technology.  My professional career has focused on management in information technology.  I am currently the Team Lead, End User Support at UFA.

I started curling because my parents and grandparents curled. As a third-generation curler I feel strongly about my responsibility to curling and growing the sport.  I am proud to say I have introduced both of my children to curling as well.

I value the curling experience CCC offers. I am honoured to be able to give back in some small way to volunteer for CCC as it strives to meet its commitments to its members.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Lethbridge.  My post-secondary education allows me to consult for the club on technology topics that allow the club to leverage digital solutions. I am currently an Android developer on the MyShaw App project at Shaw Communications.

I found curling as an adult as an affordable pursuit to stay active. I entered the sport through the learn-to-curl program in 2009.
